Hang on! It's an Adventure with God!

Advent Season: Helping, Caring, Giving

Dear Adventureland families:

We want to celebrate the Advent season together with your family as we prepare to remember the birth of Jesus! At each sign-in station in Adventureland, we have one gift for each family.  We want to encourage you to pick up your gift at the sign-in station for your youngest member of your family.

During the first week of Advent we want to think about Jesus and the ‘Helping, Caring and Giving’ He came to bring.  Here are some ideas to help reinforce this with your family this week!

          1. Switch & Swap — Here’s an opportunity to expand on the family’s understanding on how to help each other.  Have each person write one of their main chores they do each day on a slip of paper.  Put them all in a jar and have each person in the family draw a new chore they will do for that day or for the week.  At the end of the day/week ask:

How did you like the new chore?  Was it easier or harder than your normal chore?  How does it make you feel about the person who helps the family by doing that chore?  Jesus was born as a baby and lived His life helping, sharing and giving to others.  Let’s do the same this Christmas.
          2.  Christmas Card Giving – Throughout the Christmas season as Christmas cards come in the mail, or via email, gather the cards in a basket at supper time and pray for the families who sent you the cards.  Some families keep the cards throughout the year and draw out one family a week to pray for throughout the year.
         3. Gift Card Giving– To help older kids understanding how Jesus came to give us life, give each child a gift card to spend for Christmas.  Take them shopping and let them ‘redeem’ it and purchase a gift for someone else.  Explain that they were able to spend it and buy what they wanted because you paid the price.  How is this like what Jesus did for us?  Jesus gives us life because He gave His life as payment for our sins.
       4. Christmas Day is Drawing Near–Song! Here’s a song you can sing with your younger children throughout the Advent season.  If you can sing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’, you’ve got it!
Christmas Day is drawing near, bringing hope and lasting cheer.
Count the days ’til Jesus comes, bringing hope to everyone.
Christmas Day is drawing hear, bringing hope and lasting cheer!
Stay tuned for next week’s ideas to celebrate Advent!
